Winter in the Champlain Islands

Winter in the Champlain Islands

The F-f-frozen Chosen Regatta, a race of human powered machines, in City Bay, North Hero, VT

Many an autumn Saturday is spent stacking the perfect woodpile, so when winter comes we welcome the first snowfall. And even though temps can plummet below freezing, this is when the Islands often seem their warmest. Chimneys begin to sigh with smoke from wood-burning fireplaces and potbelly stoves while fishing shanties, ice skaters, and kite boarders dot the frozen lake. And if you decide to venture out for a day of skiing, there’s always plenty of hot chocolate and hearty soup to be found in town, along with a warm welcome back.

The Lake Champlain Islands are ready to welcome you season after season, as are the people who live here. Some of us have even turned our homes into B&Bs, so just let us know when to expect you. The bridges, causeways, and ferry offer ways out of town, but we’re pretty sure you won’t want to leave.

Welcome to the Lake Champlain Islands. It’s good to be here.

Coming in February 2013…
6th Annual Great Ice in Grand Isle!
February 8 – 17, 2013
Celebrate the winter on the ice! Lake Champlain’s inland sea freezes over, and so we play on City Bay in North Hero Village
Here’s the schedule

Apple Blossoms – Now!

The Champlain Islands are ready for their closeup: donning their spring finery: the apple blossoms are on their way! The Islands are blessed with three apple orchards. In South Hero, travel west on South Street and visit either Hackett’s Orchard or Allenholm Farm to see the apple trees in bloom. As their farm stands open, you can enjoy cider donuts, local maple syrup and honey, and pies. This year’s apples won’t come in until late summer, but there are plenty of other items to enjoy. At Allenholm’s petting paddock, kiss Willy the donkey – he likes peppermints – or visit the baby chicks and rabbits. In Isle La Motte, there’s Hall’s Orchard. Hall Home Place is making ice cider. Tasting and purchases are available there and at South End Café, open now. Need plants? Grand Isle Nursery and Champlain Islands Nursery are full of perennials, annuals, trees, shrubs. The Islands have the longest growing season in Vermont! It’s the “lake effect” – and we love it! So hop in the car and come on up Route 2. Better still – bring your bike or rent bikes at Allenholm Farm or Hero’s Welcome General Store and explore on two wheels! From South Hero to Alburgh there’s plenty to enjoy.
