Cultural Heritage

The Islands were discovered by Samuel de Champlain 400 years ago, while native Americans have inhabited these shores for much longer. The five towns in the Champlain Islands are rich with historical artifacts from the earliest settlers. New England's oldest log cabin is open to visitors to Grand Isle each summer. Explore the world's oldest coral reef in Isle La Motte. Knock on the door of each historical society for a peek at their treasures. Visit the many old cemeteries throughout the county. Arts in the Islands abound in the summer. Fisk Farm offers classical concerts, Sunday tea garden concerts and a barn with displays of paintings, pottery, stained glass and photography. Island Arts presents concerts and classes for adults and children. The Islands Center for Arts and Recreation presents Music in the Park, and VT Shakespeare Company in Knight Point State Park in North Hero, and Snow Farm Winery has concerts every Thursday throughout the summer. The Vermont Mozart Festival makes a yearly appearance at the Grand Isle Lake House.
